Sci-Fi TV Series: Fall 2012

This hub contains an overview of the new Sci-Fi TV shows that first premiered in Fall 2012. Like before, I've included a synopsis, preview and review for each show. At the bottom of this hub, you'll find a short list of Do's and Don'ts.

One day, for some unknown reason, electricity stops working. There is no electricity to be found anywhere. Somehow, nothing works anymore. And since people use electricity for everything, the world deteriorates into a post-apocalyptic place. Groups are formed and leaders rise to the top. One man, Ben (Tim Guinee, ‘Iron Man’) may know why the electricity went out, and perhaps how to get it back. Capt. Neville, a military man portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito (‘Once Upon a Time’), wants to take Ben with him, but he won’t budge. When Ben’s son Danny (Graham Rogers) tries to defend him, his father ends up being shot, so they take Danny instead. Now it’s up to Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos,’Rise of the Planet of the Apes’), Danny’s sister, to get help from her uncle she’s never met, Miles (Billy Burke, ‘Twilight’) and rescue her brother. Miles possesses some die hard fighting skills, which are no luxury in a post-apocalyptic world. In the meantime it seems that a weird, plectrum-like device may hold the key to getting electricity back.
‘Revolution’ is directed by Jon Favreau (‘Iron Man’) and created by J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke (‘Supernatural’). It wil premiere on NBC on September 17th at 10/9c.

The series seems exciting and original enough to become a very successful show. However, I’m sceptic about the plausibility of this story. Although it doesn’t have to be real, I do expect an explanation that is at least a little bit realistic. The most reasonable explanation that would account for this situation is some sort of magnetic pulse that interrupts electricity. However, seeing how living beings use electricity in most inner body interactions, I’m curious as to how this would work. Also, I wonder if electricity made people lazy or stupid, because everything is covered in plants. I was under the impression that even before people made use of electricity, they were able to maintain absolutely perfect gardens. Not to say this is a priority, but you’d think people would be able to get by at least a bit better.
All in all, if they’re able to provide us with a reasonable explanation this series may be quite enjoyable. If, however, they fail to come up with a believable reasoning, it may become very annoying.

Henry Marti (Dave Annable, ‘Brothers & Sisters’) and Jane Van Veen (Rachael Taylor, ‘Charlie’s Angels’) move into an impressive apartment building in New York, not knowing how this building will turn their lives around completely. They are the new managers of the building and the apartment comes with the job. However, this building is not like any other, and there seems to be no escape. ‘666 Park Avenue’ is created and produced by David Wilcox and will air on ABC, September 30th at 10/9c.

This trailer looks very interesting, but it doesn’t give a lot of information regarding the story. It doesn’t bother me though, it even makes me more anxious about seeing this series.

The CW is rebooting the classic CBS series ‘Beauty and the Beast’, this time written and produced by Jennifer Levin (‘Without a Trace’). It revolves around Catherine Chandler (Kristin Kreuk, ‘Smallville’), a homicide detective who has a guardian angel called Vincent Koslow (Jay Ryan, ‘Terra Nova’). Only her angel comes in a beastly disguise. When Catherine was a teenager her mother was killed, and if it wasn’t for an unknown hero so would she. Years after the incident Vincent’s name comes up in one of Catherine’s investigations, and she finds out he was the one who saved her. Furthermore, she knows about his secret: his anger management issues turn him into a raging animal when he’s upset. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ premieres October 11th at 9/8c.

The trailer doesn’t show much of the series, so I cannot really form an opinion about ‘Beauty and the Beast’. However, as soon as there is a better preview available I will provide you with my opinion. However, based on the story, I can already say it’s a typical The CW series. It looks like what would happen if ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and ‘Grimm’ had a baby.

This about wraps it up. All that's left are the do's and don'ts; what shows should you definitely give a try and which ones should you avoid at all costs?
