The Best Christmas Songs - Retro
Christmas songs always give me happy and cosy feelings, but also make me reminisce, in a positive way, about past Christmases. I was listening to some songs and decided to write a hub about it, to share my favorite Christmas songs with you. Quickly, I had collected so many that they wouldn't fit in one hub. This is the one featuring music that can neither be classified as true classics, nor as modern or contemporary, spanning the 1960's, 70's and early 80's.
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - Jackson Five
Popularized by Jackson 5, but originally recorded by Jimmy Boyd in 1952, this song is about a little boy who comes out of his bed at night and finds his mother kissing Santa Claus, and he is meaning to tell his father.
Feliz Navidad - José Feliciano
By Puerto Rican singer José Feliciano, this song consists of a simple Spanish and English holiday greeting: "Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad" meaning 'Merry Christmas, a prosperous year and happiness' and "I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart". Because of the two languages, the song was a hit in both English oriented countries and the Spanish speaking world, and is still returning to the radio every holiday season.
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Bruce Springsteen
Originally from the 1930's, this song has been covered by many many artists over the years. Other well known versions are by Jackson 5 and Mariah Carey.
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon and Yoko Ono
Originally criticizing the Vietnam war, this song has now become a Christmas standard that has long lost it's original connotation, with many (younger) people not even understanding the controversy that the Vietnam war raised.
Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
'Merry Xmas Everybody' is Slade's last number-one single, but also by far their most popular one. Every decade, the song was released again and in 2007 it was voted the UK's most popular Christmas song. It's a really nice and happy uptempo Christmas song.
