Don't Trust The B--- In Apartment 23 (ABC) (Renewed)

The series premiere of 'Don't Trust The B--- In Apartment 23' did quite well. The Krysten Ritter show is seen by almost 7 million people. In the coveted 18-49 demographic, the show got a 2.9 rating. These are quite promising numbers, though of course it is still too early to tell.

Update (05/06): Falling without the 'Modern Family' lead-in, the show rated a 2.0 last week. This week, the lead-in was all original again and helped 'Apartment 23' rebound to a 2.4. That is still two tenths lower versus the previous episode lead in by 'Modern Family'. Total viewers shot up again from 4.8 to 5.8 million, making the show likely to get renewed. However, nothing is definitive yet.

UPDATE (05/11): Now, things ARE definitive, 'Don't Trust The B--- In Apartment 23' got renewed by ABC for a second season at the end of a day of many, many cancellations and renewals.

Scandal (ABC) (Renewed)

ABC's 'Scandal' premiered with a 2.0 in the all-important demographic. 7.3 million people were watching the premiere of the political drama. These numbers are quite good for a spring premiere, but we'll have to see what happens in the following weeks.

Update (05/06): Steady around the 2.0 ever since the premiere, 'Scandal' rated a 1.9 in its last original episode. In total, 6.7 million people tuned in. These numbers make the show likely to get renewed.

UPDATE (05/11): Super steady throughout its 7-episode first season, the 'Scandal' finale rated a 2.0 in the all-important 18-49 demographic. 6.5 million people tuned in for the season finale. That's right, season finale, not series finale. 'Scandal' just got renewed for a second season by ABC.

Best Friends Forever (NBC) (Cancelled)

'Best Friends Forever' premiered with only a 1.2 in the demo (following 'Betty White's Off Their Rockers' with a 1.8). Almost 4 million people tuned in. This puts the show in the danger zone immediately, though a lot can still happen in the coming weeks.

Update (04/14): Pushed more and more into the danger zone, 'Best Friends Forever' rated a massive 25% lower than its premiere. While 2.78 people were watching, the show only got an 0.9 in the all-important 18-49 demographic. After airing its second episode, that moves the show to the likely cancellations.

Update (05/06): In its last original, 'Best Friends Forever' went down to an 0.8 in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic. 2.6 million people tuned in to the episode.

UPDATE (05/11): Together with 'Bent', 'Best Friends Forever' got cancelled by NBC today. Another one that wasn't a real surprise.

Bent (NBC) (Cancelled)

'Bent' premiered with a double epsiode only last Wednesday. However with only six episodes in a season and double episodes every week, its finale is already around the corner. This midseason burn-off, with no real advertising, can hardly be a good thing for an, in potential, solid romantic comedy.

The pilot episode of 'Bent' rated a 1.0 in the coveted 18-49 demographic, and the back-to-back second episode dropped two tenths to an 0.8. Since the critics are actually quite positive about 'Bent', this might not have been the smartest move by NBC. But then again, if the network would be known for its smart moves, it'd have better ratings, right?
For those interested, the first and second episode drew 2.75 and 2.38 million viewers, respectively.

Update: 'Bent's third and fourth episode rated an 0.9 and an 0.8 in the demo. Just under 2.5 million people tuned in. The show is now more certain to be canceled than ever.

UPDATE (05/11): Tough almost superfluous, NBC announced the cancellation of 'Bent' today, alongside 'Awake', 'Are You There, Chelsea?' and 'Best Friends Forever'.

Touch (FOX) (Renewed)

On January 25th, a special preview of 'Touch', a new supernatural drama, aired on FOX. The series marks Kiefer Sutherlands first big role after hit series '24'. With a 3.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and more than 12 million viewers, 'Touch' has the highest retention for a series premiere following 'American Idol'. However, this was just a preview, and it remains to be seen if the show will be as successful without this big a lead-in.

Update: FOX has moved 'Touch' to Thursdays, delaying the worldwide premiere for three days. The show will now premiere on Thursday, March 22nd, 9/8c.

Update (03/23): 'Touch's official premiere (or, confusingly, its second episode) did good, again following the now struggling 'American Idol'. It rated a 3.3 in adults 18-49 and drew 11.7 million viewers. However, there was no competition from CBS this time. I wonder what'll happen next week.

Update (04/02): This week's episode of 'Touch' was down 18% versus the premiere, to a 2.7 in the demo and 8.9 million people tuned in.

Update (05/06): In just a couple of weeks, 'Touch' has now dropped to a 2.0 rating in adults 18-49. Total viewers are down to 6.7 million. The show is still likely to get renewed, but should stop falling to remain so.

UPDATE (05/10): Now, 'Touch' doesn't have to be so careful anymore. FOX announced the show's renewal yesterday night. There is no word yet on a number of episodes for the second season. However, Martin and Jake Bohm will keep the numbers coming for a while.

NYC 22 (CBS) (Cancelled)

CBS latest cop show premiered this Sunday. 'NYC 22' premiered to 8.8 million people. However, it only got a 1.5 in the coveted 18-49 demographic. For CBS, that is a way too low number in the demo. Last week, the season finale of CSI: Miami rated a 1.7, and that had in its defence that it was delayed by 51 minutes due to the Masters Golf Tournament overrun. It aired essentially outside of prime time (it started at 10:51/9:51c) and still rated higher than 'NYC 22'. Of course, you can't judge too quickly, but for me, the show moves directly to the danger zone.

Update (04/23): Solidifying its position in the danger zone, 'NYC 22' rated a 1.4 in its second episode. Also, it lost more than 1.3 million viewers, having only 7.5 million watching. On CBS, that means you're dead meat.

Update (05/06): The Robert DeNiro produced cop show 'NYC 22' lost another two tenths in the all-important demographic, to a 1.2 in adults 18-49. 7.44 million people tuned in.

Update (05/14): On May 13th, 'NYC 22' was, as expected, cancelled by CBS.

Veep (HBO) (Renewed)

HBO's new political comedy 'Veep', starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus ('Seinfeld'), had 1.4 million viewers in its first airing. The second airing on the same night got another 296,000, which makes a total of almost 1.7 million for the series premiere.

Update (05/01): Like clockwork, HBO has announced the renewal of 'Veep' and 'Girls' yesterday. While that may seem great, it is a thing HBO almost always does. A show has to do really bad to get cancelled after one season on the cable network. 'Veep' will have a second season consisting of 10 episodes.

Girls (HBO) (Renewed)

Over on HBO, 'Girls' premiered this Sunday night at 10:30/9:30c. On its first airing, almost 900,000 people were watching. Combined with a second airing, that number goes up to 1.4 million. As you'll know, demographics don't count on cable, because they live off of subscriptions and don't care who is actually watching. The viewer numbers are a little modest, though. Last year's 'Enlightened' got lower numbers and still got renewed, so don't sweat. Also, 'Girls' had 'Game of Thrones' as a lead-in, and even though that is a ratings hit for HBO, both shows hardly share an audience. Next week, the new political comedy 'Veep' will be programmed in between the two. That may just help 'Girls' do better.

Update (04/23): This weeks airing dipped a little, even though 'Veep' premiered solidly. 'Girls' rated 1.1 million viewers combined over the two airings of the night, which is no reason to be worried.

Update (05/01): HBO has announced the renewal of 'Girls' and 'Veep' yesterday, like the use to do. 'Girls' will have a second season consisting of 10 episodes.
