New Girl (FOX) - Series Premiere: Synopsis and Review

Update: 'New Girl' does great in the ratings, and was, after airing two episodes, the first new show of Fall 2011 to be picked up for a full season of 24 episodes, adding 11 new episodes to the original order of 13.

‘New Girl’ was definitely one of the most promising new Fall 2011 comedy series. It premiered Tuesday, September 20th, at 9/8c on FOX. It stars Zooey Deschanel, the younger sister of Bones’s Emily Deschanel (portraying Dr. Brennan). Coach, a character portrayed by Damon Wayans Jr., will leave the show after the pilot due to the renewal of ‘Happy Endings’ in which Wayans is a regular. He will be replaced by Winston (Lamore Morris), returning from a professional basketball career in Croatia.

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is looking for a new apartment after she caught her boyfriend in bed with another girl. She ends up in an interview for becoming the roommate of Nick, Schmidt and Coach (Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr.). While going through the break-up, she gets rather emotional and watches Dirty Dancing six or seven times.. a day. She sings to herself and all her friends are models. After a long discussion, Schmidt decides to take her in, convinced by the model friends-part.
After a week of continuous crying to Dirty Dancing, Jess’ new roommates know that they have to do something to help her, and themselves, through her break-up. However, Jess has some persistent weird habits that make getting her a rebound not as easy as it seems.

‘New Girl’ really lives up to the expectations. Of course, the preview already gave most of the plot of the first episode away, but even when you see it for a second or third time, it is still funny. It seems that lately, most of the funny comedies are about insecure women with really weird habits (such as ‘Miranda’ and the new ‘Whitney’).
Surely, the male roles are a bit of a cliche; there is Nick the bartender, Schmidt the douchebag and Coach (to be replaced by Winston) the sports guy, but Deschanel’s performance makes you love the show and her character either way.
