How to be a Gentleman (CBS) - Series Premiere: Synopsis and Review

Updated on January 3, 2013

Update: CBS first moved 'How to be a Gentleman' to Saturday nights to the 8:30/7:30c timeslot, and later announced that it would not order any more episodes after the initial 9, thereby canceling the show.

Andrew (David Hornsby( is the creator as well as the lead character of ‘How to be a Gentleman’, a new comedy series on CBS. Andrew writes a column on how to be a gentleman, and although telling the world he is a gentleman, he actually is an uptight softy with a very high pitched voice. His bitchy sister (Mary Lynn Rasjkub, ‘24’) gives him a membership of a gym for his birthday. Turns out, the owner of the gym and Andrews personal trainer is Bert (Kevin Dillon, ‘Entourage’), who bullied Andrew all the way through high school.

The magazine Andrew writes for wants to attract ‘readers that didn’t like to read before’, and because of that, Adam needs to find a new angle for his column. Bert is the kind of guy the new column should be aimed at, so Andrew turns to him for advice. The two develop the weirdest friendship.

Andrew and Bert are the most unlikely combination, and even though their history, they become friends within the hour. It seems like CBS is having a thing with unlikely friendships, having premiered ‘2 Broke Girls’ just under two weeks ago. ‘How to be a Gentleman’ is actually quite depressing. And that is not a good thing, since it is a comedy series. There was absolutely nothing about ‘How to be a Gentleman’ that made me laugh at all.
