Fall 2011 TV Cancellations and Renewals: Will Amazon revive Pan Am? TNT and Lifetime still talking Unforgettable (05/24)

For the Fall 2011 season, many shows have already been cancelled. For others, the future depends on whether they are able to maintain or improve the current ratings, and on the benevolence of the network executives. In this Hub, I’ll give an overview of the shows that have been canceled and renewed, and keep track of the developments around other shows. So if you check back every now and then, you’ll know what shows will be renewed or canceled before the execs know it themselves!

Premiering to 10 million viewers, ABC’s historical drama ‘Pan Am’ is now down to 5.7 million viewers and a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. According to these numbers, the show should have been canceled by now, though it seems that the show has a lot of support from the network.

Update (11/07): 'Pan Am' has stopped falling in the ratings, touching down with 5.46 million passengers and a 1.8 in the 18-49 demographic. This might be due to 'Once Upon a Time' viewers sticking around. When renewing 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Last Man Standing', ABC also ordered five more episodes for 'Pan Am'.

Update (11/15): Sunday's episode of 'Pan Am' was up one tenth to a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, drawing a total of 5.68 million viewers. Although quite steady in the ratings, the turbulence is far from over for 'Pan Am'.

Update (11/19): In ABC's mid-season schedule, 'Pan Am' only got one more episode ordered on top of the current 13. Officially, there has not been an announcement yet, and ABC is even being quoted saying that the show is "technically being considered for a second season". That ship, however, has sailed a long time ago, and it is safe to assume that this will be the end for 'Pan Am'.

Update (02/14): Having its season (and most likely also series) finale scheduled on February 19th, 'Pan Am's penultimate episode rated only an 0.7 in adults 18-49. 2.57 million people tuned in to the show, that wouldn't even be considered a success on The CW..

Update (02/24): Winning a stunning 71%, 'Pan Am's finale got a 1.2 in the demo; 3.77 million people tuned in to see the show lift off to an unknown destination. Or at least, that's the official statement. We, rational people, all know that its headed straight to Cancellation Airport.

Update (05/24): "Ladies and gentleman, welcome aboard. We are headed towards Amazon and .." Wait, what? Yes, that's right. Amazon, the oversized bookstore, is now officially considering to step into the original programming business by reviving 'Pan Am'. While the show about the former airline of the same name wasn't that big of a hit in the US (props to those who spotted the understatement), it was quite successful in Europe. Actually, it won the Rose d'Or award for Best Series (the European equivalent of an Emmy) just this month. Sony Pictures TV then announced, after the cancellation by ABC, that they were exploring other avenues to revive 'Pan Am', and they are now in the talks with Amazon to do so. If Amazon can get the streaming rights for Europe, that might be a lucrative deal. Please remain seated (and keep your seat belts fastened at all times) for the latest news concerning the possible revival of 'Pan Am' and other shows.

While decreasing a little over the past few weeks, the last episode of CBS’s ‘Unforgettable’ went up 9% in the 18-49 demo to 2.5 with an average total of 12 million viewers. For the 10/9c timeslot, these ratings are pretty good.
On October 25th, CBS announced that 'Unforgettable' would get a full season pick-up.

Update (11/15): Winning back one of the two lost tenths of the week before, last week's episode of 'Unforgettable' was up to a 2.4 rating among 18-49 year olds and 11.72 million total viewers.

Update (01/11): Returning from the holiday season, 'Unforgettable' tied its season low by dropping 19% to a 2.1 rating in the demo, with 11.20 million viewers. Of CBS's rookie dramas 'Person Of Interest' is currently looking as the safer choice for renewal. The question with respect to 'Unforgettable' is whether CBS has place for two renewed rookie dramas.

Update (02/08): After a couple of weeks on hiatus, 'Unforgettable' returns a tenth higher. It got a 2.2 in the all-important demo and 11.7 million viewers.

Update (02/15): Winning another tenth, 'Unforgettable' rates a 2.3 this week, and gets almost 11 million viewers. However, 'Person Of Interest' is far superior in the ratings, and CBS is probably looking at a lot of new shows for the Fall season. Will 'Unforgettable' still fit in their schedule, while rating only in the low twos?

Update (02/24): 'Unforgettable' loses three tenths in the ratings, to a 2.0 in adults 18-49. 10.7 million people tuned in. There is not really an explanation for this dip; does this mean people have stopped caring about 'Unforgettable'?

Update (02/14): The last original episode of 'Unforgettable', on February 28th, rated even lower with a 1.9 in adults 18-49 and a little less than 10 million viewers. The show is definitely not heading in the right direction and also missing in today's renewal spree means that it is getting more and more likely that 'Unforgettable' will get canceled.

Update (05/14): After the ratings of 'Unforgettable' kept declining, CBS cancelled the show on May 13th. CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said it was not so much the question "what went wrong with 'Unforgettable' but what went right with the new pilots".

Update (05/19): According to Deadline, producers Sony Pictures TV and CBS TV Studios are in the talks with both TNT and Lifetime about possibly picking up 'Unforgettable'. Although this is not definitive at all yet, it is certainly better than no news at all.

The new ABC Tim Allen show ‘Last Man Standing’ premiered to almost 13 million people with a 3.5 rating in the all important 18-49 demographic. Just a week later, the show was down to 2.8 in the demo and 9.8 million viewers.
On November 1st, 'Last Man Standing' was down two tenths in the rating, to a 2.7 in the 18-49 demo. The Tim Allen comedy drew 9.42 million people to their televisions and despite this little drop, 'Last Man Standing' was picked up for a full season by ABC.

Update (01/13): Tying its season low when returning from the holidays, 'Last Man Standing' lost three tenths to a 2.1 rating in the demographic and 7.57 million viewers. However,ABC seems to be pleased with 'Last Man Standing', as they just added two more installments, giving the Tim Allen-show a full 24-episode first season.

Update (01/18): This weeks airing of 'Last Man Standing' gained an impressive 24% to a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, with 8.5 million viewers. With the ratings going up and ABC showing confidence in the show by adding two more episodes, you should start preparing for having Tim Allen around for another season.

Update (02/08): A double episode for 'Last Man Standing' got a 2.3 and a 2.5 in adults 18-49. Respectively 7.75 and 7.97 million people tuned in. These numbers should be very reassuring to Tim Allen lovers.

UPDATE (05/11): The latest renewal of the day is 'Last Man Standing' by ABC. How do you feel about having Tim Allen around for another season? Let me know in the comments section!

Over on The CW, 'The Secret Circle' premiered to a 1.3 rating in the all-important demographic and 3 million viewers. In consecutive weeks, the show rated around 1.0 and became The CW's second highest rated show, following 'The Vampire Diaries'. After the holidays, 'The Secret Circle' returned with twice a 0.8 rating and last Thursday's episode (Jan. 19th) drew 1.63 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.

'Hart Of Dixie' had the worst premiere of all new The CW shows, rating only 0.8 in the demo and attracting 1.88 million viewers. While dipping for a couple of weeks to 0.6 ratings, its last original airings (November 28th and December 5th) rated 0.9 and 0.8 respectively, both with just over 1.7 million viewers. 'Hart Of Dixie' returns tonight (Jan. 23rd) to The CW.

A stronger premiere had 'Ringer', with a 1.2 rating and 2.84 million viewers. However, in just three weeks it was down to a 0.6. Later episodes before the holiday break rated between 0.6 and 0.8. For promotional reasons concerning the premiere of 'ReModeled' (which turned out to be a disaster), 'Ringer's return was postponed for three weeks, and will return January 31st.

For The CW, predicting renewals and cancellations is very difficult. Actually the only show with acceptable ratings is 'The Vampire Diaries' (which also rates only between 1.0 and 1.5 since the holidays). Since The CW hasn't got much to work with, that one is definitely going to be renewed. All other shows have terrible ratings and therefore their future is not safe. However, it is quite unlikely that the network is going to cancel all but one scripted show, so some series will have to survive. Rumors are that The CW is shopping around for a record number of pilots, so there'll probably be quite a lot of casualties at the end of this season.

For these three shows, much will depend on their relative ratings to each other and other The CW shows. They'll actually have to stand out quite a bit to really make a difference. 'The Secret Circle' is currently around 0.8's, but 'Hart Of Dixie' and 'Ringer' have been away for almost two months, and I wonder how many people will remember to watch it again.

Update (01/25): Returning from the holidays, 'Hart Of Dixie' rated a dramatical 0.5. 'Gossip Girl' also only rated a 0.6. However, the shows have been away for many weeks, and The CW was preempted in Chicago for a basketball game, so maybe they'll go up again next week.

Update (02/01): Both 'Gossip Girl' (with its 100th/wedding episode) and 'Hart Of Dixie' gained one tenth in the ratings, to an 0.7 and an 0.6 in the 18-49 demo, respectively. The latter did get more total viewers, though, with almost 1.5 million for 'Hart Of Dixie', against 1.36 million for 'Gossip Girl'.
'Ringer' returned from its two-month hiatus with an 0.6 in the coveted demographic, even with its season low, which was its last November episode. The way The CW is doing now, I'm not going to burn my fingers on predicting whether this means cancellation or not, because everything is possible.

Update (02/24): In the last three weeks, 'The Secret Circle' rated quite steady 0.8s, while 'Hart Of Dixie' struggles around 0.6/0.5 and 'Ringer' is just horrible with a low of an 0.4. I'm quite speechless about these ratings. Also, I hope that The CW is preparing a very good lineup for next Fall.

UPDATE (05/11): While the logic isn't yet clear to me, The CW has cancelled 'Ringer' and 'The Secret Circle, but decided to renew 'Hart of Dixie' for a full 22-episode season. If I'd had to guess I would've said that 'The Secret Circle' would be the sole survivor. However, all of these shows were doing terrible in the ratings and I wonder what the next season will bring for The CW.

For the first half of the season, 'Up All Night' has been averaging around a 2.0 rating in the 14-49 demographic and 5 million viewers. For NBC, this was reason to extend the initial 13 episode season with 9 extra episodes to a full 22. Later NBC decided to add 2 more, bringing the first season up to 24 episodes. However, acknowledging that ratings aren't that good either, the show is on the move in midseason.

Update (01/13): On its midseason return in a new timeslot, 'Up All Night' posted a rating of 2.0, 5% up from the last original episode, with 4.28 million viewers.

Update (01/21): Losing last weeks winnings, 'Up All Night' was down 5% to a 1.9 rating in the all-important demographic. Thursday's episode drew just over 4 million viewers. Overall, the show is doing fine (for NBC) and its won't go anywhere, anytime soon.

Update (02/05): Thursday's episode of 'Up All Night' lost another tenth, and some 300,000 viewers. It rated a 1.8 in the demo and drew 3.7 million viewers.

UPDATE (05/11): While not doing that great in the ratings, 'Up All Night' got renewed by NBC for a 13 episode second season. We'll see Amy grow up for at least a little while longer. Don't be too scared by the 13 episode order, because that seems to be NBC's new tactic with many shows. So this is not an immediate reason to think 'Up All Night' will be canceled afterwards.

Premiering to 6.8 million people, 'Whitney' was down to around 4 million on its last original episode that aired on December 8th. Ratings in the demo, in the mean time, averaged about 2.0. Like with 'Up All Night', NBC decided that that was promising enough to give the show a nine-back order. Also like 'Up All Night', ratings are ok, but definitely not great, so the network decided to shuffle some shows around the schedule, moving 'Whitney' to Wednesday nights.

Returning from the holidays and a move around the schedule, 'Whitney' drew 5.8 million viewers, with a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demo, 9% up versus its last original broadcast. On its second Wednesday airing, and first head-to-head with 'American Idol', 'Whitney' dropped 20% to a series low of 1.6 in the 18-49 demographic, and 4.3 million people tuned in.

Update (01/27): This Wednesday, 'Whitney' fell another 13% to a rating of 1.4 in the all-important demo. In its second airing opposite 'American Idol', 4.4 million people tuned in.

Update (02/03): Without the normal competition from CBS and ABC, 'Whitney' was only up against the suffering (though still ratings hit) 'American Idol'. Seeing that, an uptick of 21% to a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo isn't all that surprising.

Update (02/11): This week, 'Whitney' lost most of last week's gain as it was down to a 1.5 in adults 18-49, with little over 4 million people tuning in.

Update (03/10): 'Whitney' rated a 1.6 in the demo this week, just a little higher than its companion show 'Are You There, Chelsea?'. 4.2 million people tuned in to this weeks episode.

Update (03/29): In its first season finale, 'Whitney' dipped to a 1.5 in the all-important demographic. With 4.1 million people tuning in, 'Whitney' can't be sure of a second season, even on NBC.

UPDATE (05/11): Even though I wasn't too sure of it, 'Whitney' got renewed today, alongside 'Up All Night'. I guess not everybody is too happy about it, but Whitney Cummings will be around for another season.

When getting picked up for a full season on October 13th, ‘Revenge’ had the highest rating drama premiere of the season (‘Once Upon a Time’ has taken over this title, see elsewhere in this hub).

Ever since, 'Revenge' rated high 2's and even a 3.0 in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic for a couple of months. At those times, between 7.75 and 9 million people were watching 'Revenge' every week.

Later on in the season, the series' ratings started dropping to low 2's which are still solid ratings in adults 18-49 for a new show. Total viewers went only a bit down to between 7 and 8 million. All in all, chances for renewal are pretty high for 'Revenge'.

UPDATE (05/10): Along with 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Suburgatory', 'Revenge' was renewed by ABC for a second season. That means that Emily will haunt The Hamptons for a little while longer, unfortunately for the inhabitants.

ABC’s fairy tale drama has become the highest-rated drama series premiere of the season, leaving ABC’s ‘Revenge’, CBS’s ‘Person of Interest’ and FOX’s ‘Terra Nova’ behind. With 12.8 million viewers and a 4.0 18-49 rating, it was also the highest rated non-football show.

Update (10/31): 'Once Upon a Time' only lost a tenth in the demo, falling to 3.9 last Sunday. Total viewers also dipped a little, to 11.64 million. As of yet, there have only been good signs for 'Once Upon a Time'.

Update (11/07): After airing only two episodes, 'Once Upon a Time' received a full-season pick-up from ABC. This is not really unexpected since the series premiere was the highest rating drama premiere of the season, and the second episode matched the ratings of the first, even though there was more competition.

Update (01/09): 'Once Upon A Time' surged up 28% from its last original episode on December 11, to a 3.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, with 10.33 million viewers in total. Climbing this much over the holidays is definitely a good sign.

Update (01/17): This Sunday, 'Once Upon A Time' lost 11% in the demo to a 3.3 rating. Almost 10 million people tuned in. Though a little bit down, these numbers are still great.

Update (01/25): Opposite the 21.4 rating football game Giants-49ers, 'Once Upon A Time' rated an impressive 3.2, with 9.33 million viewers. This is only a tenth down versus last week, which makes it the highest rating non-football game of the night.

Update (02/14): With the Grammy Awards on CBS, 'Once Upon A Time' still rated a 3.0 in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.6 million people tuned in. Getting these ratings with such competition is a great thing.

Update (02/24): I expected 'Once Upon A Time' to be a bit higher this week. However it was quite flat with a 3.1 in the 18-49 demo, only up one tenth.

Update (03/21): While the March 4th episode was up to a 3.4 in the demo, the last two episodes tied the show's season low at a 2.9 in adults 18-49. 8.6 million people were watching the latest 'Once Upon A Time' episode.

UPDATE (05/10): ABC finally came through with its first renewal; 'Once Upon a Time' gets a second season, making the 'happily ever after' wait for a bit longer to kick in. Of course, this comes as no surprise. I wonder what Regina is planning for next year.

Since getting a full season order on October 13th, 'Suburgatory' has been slowly but steadily declining from its series high of a 3.4 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic to a 2.0 for the latest couple of episodes. Total viewers have been falling from about 9 million to about 6 million. However, these ratings are still not bad and 'Suburgatory' might have earned itself some kudos at ABC headquarters with the high ratings it got before.

UPDATE (05/10): On May 10th, ABC announced the renewal of 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Suburgatory', among others. It seems like we'll be sticking around in Chatswin for a while longer.

Supernatural drama ‘A Gifted Man’ is CBS’ lowest rating weekday prime time show, though the last episode was first in it’s Friday night timeslot, with 8.7 million viewers and a 5.6 rating in the all important demo. The show is not really picking up and therefore it seems likely that CBS will sit the 13 episodes out but not order a full 22 episode season. If they do give the back order, however, chances for a second season with the current ratings are very tiny.

Update (11/22): Three more episodes were ordered by CBS for 'A Gifted Man'. Normally, this is the time of the season that shows get either a nine back order or get cancelled. What is different with this show is that its ratings in terms of total viewers are good, winning the timeslot, but the rating in the 18-49 demo is only just over 1.0. What this means? That older people are watching 'A Gifted Man'. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, except the fact that most advertisements are aimed at that special 18-49 or even 18-34 demographic. The consequence is that CBS can charge less for the ads that air during 'A Gifted Man'.
The three episodes that were ordered could be a nice gesture to that relatively large group of viewers, to wrap up the story, or it could be that CBS isn't sure what to do with the (relatively problematic) timeslot. Either way, it is unlikely that 'A Gifted Man' will make it beyond midseason.

Update (01/15): 'A Gifted Man' rated a 1.5 in the all-important demo on its first original episode in midseason. However, total viewers were still 8.6 million, indicating that its established fan base is sticking with the show until the very end. This Friday's episode rated 1.3 again, down to its season average.

Update (02/14): Still rating around 1.3, 'A Gifted Man' only has two episodes left. With these ratings in the 18-49 demographic, there is no chance that it will be renewed on CBS. Still, over 8 million people are loyally watching every week. If you're among those people, enjoy the last two episodes!

Update (03/04): The penultimate and final episode of 'A Gifted Man's first season (and inevitably also of the entire series) rated a 1.3 and a 1.4, respectively. Almost 10 million people tuned in to the finale, to say their last goodbyes to Michael Holt.

UPDATE (05/10): Not surprisingly at all, CBS announced the cancellation of 'A Gifted Man' today. If you have been paying attention even the slightest bit, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

After premiering late in the Summer of 2011, 'The Lying Game' got 12 additional episodes ordered by ABC Family on September 15th. The second half of the season averaged over 25% higher than the first half, which makes it no surprise that the network has decided to pick the show up for another season. Production of season 2 will commence in the Summer, with a possible premiere in Midseason.

As FOX’s highest rating sitcom premiere ever, Zooey Deschanel’s ‘New Girl’ was the first new Fall 2011 show to be picked up for a full season, after only two episodes were broadcast. This so-called nine back order brings the show from 13 to 22 episodes for the first season.
After the holidays, 'New Girl' returned with a 3.4 rating, 0.1 up from its last original episode on December 17th. With these numbers, 'New Girl' is steadily heading towards a renewal.

Update (02/01): Last week, there was the State of the Union, but this week, FOX was back with original episodes. 'New Girl' was up by a tenth again, now to a 3.5 in adults 18-49. In addition to that, it drew 7.2 million viewers.

Update (02/08): 'New Girl' was steady this week, with another 3.5 in the 18-49 demographic and 6.9 million viewers.

Update (02/15): Probably losing due to Valentine's, 'New Girl' rated a 3.1 in the demo and got 6.5 million viewers. With most shows losing this week, that's not all that bad.

Update (03/10): After a hiatus of a couple of weeks, 'New Girl' was back with a quite disappointing, though still good 3.0 in adults 18-49. Exactly 6 million people tuned in.

UPDATE (04/09): Together with 'Glee' and 'Raising Hope', FOX has decided to renew 'New Girl' for a second season. Being the #1 new series among adults 18-34, that is not really a surprise. With the 24 episodes in the first season, and now that a second season is ordered, how long will it take before the show has to change the title into 'Old Girl'?

The premiere of 'Grimm' was, apart from the World Series, the highest rated show of the night. As a matter of fact, it was the highest rated non-sports Friday program since New Year's eve. The series premiered to 6.4 million viewers and a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. In Live + 7 Days, 'Grimm' grew 47% to a 3.1 in the rating, meaning many people DVR'ed the show.
The second episode dropped 14% (from the original 2.1 rating for the premiere) to a 1.8 rating and 6.01 million viewers. The third episode was down again, now to a 1.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.18 million viewers.

Update (11/22): This week's episode of 'Grimm' was steady with another 1.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 5.4 million viewers. NBC was pleased by these numbers and announced yesterday that 'Grimm' will get nine additional episodes, bringing the count up to a full 22 episode season.

Update (03/04): Since the holidays, 'Grimm's ratings have been fluctuating between a 1.4 and a 1.8 in the all-important demographic. Total viewer numbers have been lying between 5 and 6 million. This Friday's episode rated a 1.7 and 5.6 million viewers. These numbers are quite sure to get 'Grimm' to a renewal for a second season, as it airs both on NBC and on Friday nights.

UPDATE (03/16): As expected, NBC renewed 'Grimm' for second season. The peacock network probably felt that it needed to act after CBS's renewal fest two days ago, and renewed their Friday fairy tale drama that was going to be renewed anyway. The second season will also consist of 22 episodes.

Jim Caviezel (‘The Passion of the Christ’) and Michael Emerson (‘Lost’) crime show ‘Person of Interest’ is doing just fine on CBS, averaging a total of 12.5 million viewers and an average 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the first few episodes.

Update (01/11): The last original episode of 'Person Of Interest' aired on December 15th, posting the shows highest ratings to date, with 12.8 million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo. These numbers are good, and if tomorrow's episode (January 12) rates anywhere near those numbers, the show might just be renewed in the future.

Update (01/13): The midseason premiere marked series highs for 'Person Of Interest', with a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 14.86 million viewers in total.

Update (01/21): Up a tenth, 'Person Of Interest' had a 3.3 rating this Thursday, which means another season high. A little less than last week, 14.3 million people tuned in. 'Person Of Interest' is doing better and better, in both the episodes and the ratings, and it's going fast towards a second season.

Update (02/05): With another 3.3, 'Person Of Interest' was even with its season high from two weeks ago. In total viewers, it gained 6% to 15.1 million viewers, and though that not really means anything, they're still great numbers.

Update (02/11): Perfectly even with last week, 'Person Of Interest' rated another 3.3 in the all-important demo and got 15.1 million viewers.

Update (02/18): Among general lows, 'Person Of Interest' lost 12%, to a 2.9 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic. In total viewers, the show got 13.2 million.

UPDATE (03/14): After another season high rating of 3.4 last week, CBS has decided to renew 'Person Of Interest' for a second season. Since it is CBS's number one freshman show, the renewal comes as no surprise. 'Person Of Interest' is one of the eighteen renewed shows on CBS, which on March 14th is quite early in the season.

'2 Broke Girls' can be considered CBS's latest hit comedy, premiering to 19.4 million people and a 7.1 rating in the key demographic, following the first 'Two And A Half Men' season premiere without Charlie Sheen. With these numbers, it's the highest premiering show since over a decade. Later episodes lost a couple of million viewers, but that is not a problem at all if you're still averaging almost 12 million for the entire Fall season with ratings around 4.5 among adults 18-49. The first episode of midseason hit par again, with just over 12 million viewers and a 4.3 rating. I could try and make this a very interesting story by saying that we should wait and see what the next episodes of '2 Broke Girls' will do, but there is actually no doubt at all.

Update (03/14): After another two months of good ratings, CBS renewed '2 Broke Girls' today, together with seventeen other shows on the network. Expect to see more of Max, Caroline and their horse next TV season.

Tonight, FOX's latest Fall comedy will premiere. 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' centers around two single mothers and their daughters. Wanting to give their daughters the youth they never had, they’ve created two spoilt, mean girls. The first episode will be aired at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.

Update (12/5): 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' premiered to a 2.8 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 6.8 million viewers. That is not really a bad thing, though is certainly isn't great either. There have been a lot of negative reviews about the show from critics who saw the previews (and the privileged few who already got to see the pilot), which might explain the moderate attention. Also, the fact that the season is already so far in may have lost the show some potential viewers.

Update (12/14): The second episode of 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' dropped an enormous 25% to a 2.1 rating in the demographic and 5.38 million viewers. This is a huge drop for the second episode of a comedy series, but after all, for this show, that was not really unexpected.

Update (12/22): The two following episodes rated 1.8 and 2.0 in the demo, respectively, and drew between 5 and 6 million viewers.

Update (03/09): Finally back from hiatus, 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' rated a 1.6 and drew 3.7 million viewers. After such a long hiatus, this kind of decline isn't really surprising. However, ratings were never really good for the show, so this just might be the beginning of the end.

Update (03/14): And indeed, this week the show lost 19% and went down to a 1.3 in the all-important demographic. 3.5 million people are still watching 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter'.

UPDATE (05/11): On May 10th, FOX announced the cancellation of 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter'. This came as no surprise, given the fact that FOX yanked it from its schedule a couple of weeks before, for a summer burn-off. It is unclear if the remaining episodes will still air in June, as was planned.

Due to the high production costs, FOX immediately ordered Steven Spielberg’s ‘Terra Nova’ to a 13 episode season, without first shooting a pilot episode. Because of those same high costs, 4 million dollars each episode, there will surely be no extension of the season. For ‘Terra Nova’, it’s all about a renewal for a next season. After the premiere that totalled 12 million viewers including DVR, numbers declined a little. Last week, though, ‘Terra Nova’ bumped 12% in the all important 18-49 demographic to a 2.8 rating and 19% in overall viewers to 8.3 million viewers.

Update (11/08): As highest rebounding show from last week when it was Halloween, 'Terra Nova' was 16% up in total viewers to 7.75 million and an amazing 24% up to a 2.6 rating. The last new episode before Halloween (two weeks before) had a 2.8 rating though, so that is still a net loss of 0.2.

Update (12/21): 'Terra Nova's first season finale ticked up 5% in the demo to a 2.2 rating and a total 7.2 million viewers from a series low last week. According to some, the double episode finally brought what they were watching for in the first place. However, with the first season now concluded, there is still no obvious thing to do for FOX.

Anyone would have to admit that 'Terra Nova' isn't doing great; for certain a lot worse than expected. However, it can still go either way for the show. The network could decide to cancel and cut their losses. On the other hand, it is not doing that bad either, so with a budget cut and maybe some alterations in the story lines, there might still be a future for 'Terra Nova'.

UPDATE (03/06): FOX announced late last night that there won't be a second season of its Steven Spielberg dinosaur drama. Official word is that the 20th Century Fox studios are shopping the show around to find another network. However, don't get your hopes up, because 'Terra Nova' is a very expensive show that has already gotten a lot of negative critiques. My advice; consider this show extinct.

Update: Not surprisingly, Netflix hasn't decided to pick up a multi million dollar dinosaur show with bad ratings. Now, 'Terra Nova' is really dead.

‘The Playboy Club’ was the first new Fall 2011 show to be canceled, after airing only three episodes averaging 4 million viewers. The remaining episodes haven’t aired, but NBC reportedly hopes to sell the series to another network. The horrible ratings and the early cancellation by NBC make that a quite unlikely scenario, at least in my eyes.
Just two days later, The CW’s reality series ‘H8R’ and NBC’s ‘Free Agents’ were the second and third casualties of the season.
For CBS's 'How To Be A Gentleman', ABC's 'Charlie's Angels' and NBC's 'Prime Suspect', the respective networks announced not to order any new episode due to disappointing ratings. 'Prime Suspect's final two episodes will be aired on Sunday, January 22, and NBC's official position is that they are still considering their options.
After airing 8 episodes, 'Man Up!' was cancelled due to bad ratings as well.

FX’s horror series ‘American Horror Story’ premiered to 3.2 million viewers, and same-day repeats added almost 2 million. The second episode declined a little in the ratings, though the third was up to almost 3 million again, climbing 5% in overall viewers and 12% in the 18-49 demo.

Update (10/28): The fourth episode of 'Horror' was a series high in the key demographics (18-34, 18-49) and women 25-54. Almost 3 million people tuned in to the original airing of this episode, which was led in by the cable premiere of 'Twilight'. Growing two weeks in a row is a healthy sign for a serialized drama, and with next week's episode being the second part of this week's, the numbers may remain stable or rise again. A

Update (11/01): FX announced yesterday that 'American Horror Story' would get another 13 episode season. Being one of FX highest rating series ever, the renewal comes as no surprise.

Update (11/15): With 2.8 million viewers and a 1.6 rating, 'American Horror Story' tied for Wednesday's cable lead in the 18-49 demo with 'South Park'. Also, it was steady on a week-to-week basis and the show even helped making this October FX's best viewed month ever. So far, only superlatives are sufficient to describe 'Horror's ratings.

Update (12/14): 'American Horror Story's season finale is in sight, and the show keeps easily winning it's timeslot and even the Wednesday night in cable ratings week after week. Ratings keep fluctuating around 1.7 in the demo and some 3 million viewers. This new horror/drama series is one of FX's greatest successes to date and according to some, it's the best new show of the Fall 2011 season. After tonight's episode and next week's double episode season finale, there'll be very high expectations for the second season.

Update (12/25): The first season finale of 'Horror' proved to be the best watched episode to date, with 3.22 million viewers Live + Same Day. For the first five episodes, average viewing numbers for Live, Same Day, DVR, video-on-demand and online viewing are 8.6 million viewers per episode. This makes this season FX's highest rating first season of a show in the network's history.
It was also announced by creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk that the next season will start from scratch, with a new house or building, a new family and new ghosts. Some of the actors will return though (or are still negotiating), but as different characters. I, for one, am hoping for the return of at least Jessica Lange or Connie Britton, as they showed us a great performance this season.

The premiere of Showtime’s ‘Homeland’ was record breaking with a total of 1.3 million viewers over two airings. The series premiere was available online, and across platforms a grand total of 4.4 million people watched the pilot episode. Subsequent episodes were watched by an increasing number of viewers every week. Showtime is a cable network, so the demo is not important here, and the steady numbers of over a million make it very likely that ‘Homeland’ will be renewed for another season.

Update (10/26): Showtime just announced that record breaking drama series ‘Homeland’ is renewed for a second season. Production will begin in spring 2012, meaning that the second season will start airing in the late summer or fall of 2012.
