2 Broke girls (CBS) - Series Premiere: Synopsis and Review

On September 19th the new comedy ‘2 Broke Girls’ premiered on CBS, the following episodes will air on Mondays 8:30/7:30c. The show is produced by Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King. The show evolves around two broke girls, Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs). Max grew up in a working-class family and is now a waitress in a Brooklyn diner. Her new colleague Caroline is the daughter of a Bernie Madoff-like man, who has just lost all of his money. Max can’t stand Caroline, because she’s a spoiled brat who has never worked a day in her life.

The pilot starts off with Max working her butt off in the diner. The very first joke is about her boobs, that is a shame because it is so easy to make vulgar jokes, and nobody will be really impressed with that. The pilot contains a lot of these easy jokes that aren’t funny anymore, because there are so many of them. But to be fair, there are a few genuinely funny bits, for example when a customer snaps his fingers to get Max’ attention, Max keeps snapping her fingers in his face. This is funny, but when she brings up the knit hat-coldplay joke the moment was gone.
When Caroline makes her appearance the show doesn’t really improve. She’s the typical rich-to-poor girl, she has never worked and she is unworldly when it comes to regular life styles. Also, the interaction between Caroline and Max seems fake. The hatred of Max towards Caroline is way too outspoken, but somehow, after only one day they have become best friends.

‘2 Broke girls’ is one of many in its kind, and like most of them, it doesn’t live up to its potential. Of course it seems nice to put two complete opposites together and see how they become friends, but this is a quite worn concept. The world is ready for some real comedy, and not the old cliches we’ve already seen over and over again.
